Our Server sees incoming/outgoing data when you are downloading a file, but Windows doesn't see it if you have not changed pages (changing pages creates larger in/out data tranfer) in the amount of idle time, & will cause your computer to kick you off the Internet.

To check your computer time settings for the Internet, Click on the START BUTTON on the Taskbar, choose SETTINGS, then choose CONTROL PANEL.
Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
Click on the CONNECTIONS tab
click on the SETTINGS button
Click on the ADVANCED button
Uncheck the box for this option so that you won't get cut off while trying to download large files. Click OK when finished.

Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting on the same line that you use for the Internet, all kinds of problems arise. Usually, if someone calls you, you are immediately knocked off the Internet. There is a code to "Cancel Call Waiting" during your session on the Internet. In this area, the code is "*70," (don't enter the "). Just enter this code in front of the dial-up phone number. There is one GOTCHA for members living in GTE's service area. You must purchase "Cancel Call Waiting" from GTE for 90cents/month or the *70, will not work!!!!! If you live in a SWB service area, you don't have to purchase anything - *70, will work.

To check phone lines for static:

  1. 1. Take a REGULAR phone (NOT A CORDLESS!)& plug it into the wall jack that you are using for your computer.
  2. 2. Pick up the receiver & dial the #5 (just to get rid of the dial tone)
  3. 3. Listen for static or ANY noise
  4. 4. If you hear static or noise, take the phone outside to the GREY phone box (usually on the side of the house, or on the electric pole)
  5. 5. Open the grey box, & then open the flip slot over the wires going in.  You should find a test jack behind the flip slot.
  6. 6. Plug the phone into the test jack & repeat steps 2 & 3.
If you heard static from the jack in the house, but not the outside box, then there is a problem in the line between the grey box & the house, & it should be replaced. (You can do this yourself.  The wire/wall jacks can be found at a hardware store)

If you heard static from BOTH jacks, then please call the phone company as the problem is farther down the line.
